Waiting Room

by Antoni Czarczyński

The starting point of my project is the topic of maritime transportation system which is a very problematic industry on the ethical axis. Workers performing that kind of labour are subject to harsh working conditions with very low compensation and assistance, all of which is often facilitated by legal tricks (involving ship registration). My aim is to portray some of those sailors and give recognition to their struggle. At the same time, I want to counter their invisibility which stems from the non-teritorrial character of their work. What is more, I want to enhance the power of the story by combining portraiture with photographs of the Rotterdam harbour’s infrastructure which in itself is obscure and in some ways unwelcoming. Another important actor in that thematic realm is water which has always been the witness to all suffering and misfortune happening at sea. It, too, will have its place in the work.
